If you've ever bought a grow light based on wattage alone, you know the disappointment. Advertised 300W, actual wall draw 180W. Claimed coverage, not so much. Choose the budget fixture if: you're experimenting with your first grow, you have more time than money, you can accept a higher failure rate, or you're only running a small closet and can tolerate a fan that sounds like a leaf blower. No judgment. I've been there. Just don't call it a long-term investment.

What was best practice in 2020 doesn't automatically apply in 2025. The industry has moved from blurple to white diodes, and budget lights have gotten better. The fundamentals haven't changed: real efficiency, warranty support, and what a light costs per usable par over three years. That's the comparison worth making.

Buy the right light once. Or buy the cheap one twice. Either way, the cost finds you.
