Three reminders I still need
I've been installing commercial lighting for indoor horticulture since 2018, and I've personally made, documented, and paid for 11 significant installation mistakes. Total cost: roughly $3,400 in wasted hardware, rework, and one very embarrassing phone call. This checklist is what I now use to avoid my own history. Use it when you're hanging a flood light on an outside wall, moving a floor spotlight to a new display, or installing a grow light. Different fixtures, same kinds of failures: wrong beam, wrong mount, wrong height, no test. Six steps, in order.
Step 1: Know whether you need a flood light or a spotlight
A flood light spreads light across a wide area. A spotlight aims a concentrated beam at one point. A floor spotlight is just an accent light standing on the floor: it makes one potted plant look fantastic in a showroom, but it will not light a full canopy evenly.
I learned this in 2019 when I installed a narrow-beam spotlight over a twenty-foot driveway. It created one bright circle and two very dark ends. The customer paid me to come back and replace it with a flood light. Which, honestly, was fair. Most LED grow lights behave like flood lights, and that is the point: they are designed for even coverage over a flat canopy. When you see a spotlight-style grow fixture, that should be a red flag unless the manufacturer explains exactly why the optics make sense.
Step 2: Read the spec sheet again, not from memory
Spec sheets change, models get updated, and memory gets confident in exactly the wrong way. I once hung the ViparSpectra P1000 grow light six inches higher than the manual recommended because I remembered an older model's numbers. The seedlings stretched while I insisted the fixture was fine. The manual had not moved. My memory had. Honestly, I'm not sure why manuals don't print hanging height on the front page; it's the number I need most. My best guess is they want you to read the whole booklet. Fine, read the whole booklet.
So before you touch a ladder: open the product page or PDF and write down three numbers: coverage area, hanging distance, and power draw. If you keep manuals in PDF form, search for them with Mac Spotlight on your computer. The first file that comes up may be the old version, so check the model before trusting it. Note to self: put the model number in the filename before saving it.
Do the same when you compare fixtures. I went back and forth between the ViparSpectra P1000 grow light and the ViparSpectra XS1500 150W LED grow light for almost a week. The P1000 made sense for a budget-conscious client testing a new crop in a 2x2 tent. My gut said the XS1500 would give them more headroom if they expanded. I chose the P1000 because a small first order should not be upsold into something bigger than the trial requires. The client proved the concept, and they now run six XS1500s in a much larger room.
Step 3: Mount it to something rated for the actual weight
In September 2022, I mounted a seven-pound flood light housing on an exterior wall using plastic drywall anchors that were clearly designed for a five-pound mirror. Three weeks later, the housing was hanging by its wire. The rework cost $180, and the second trip taught me the boring lesson I should have learned the first time.
Check three things. One: fixture weight. Two: anchor or screw rating. Three: the material you are mounting into. If you are hanging a grow light inside a tent, the frame is usually designed to hold the weight, but use the adjustable hangers that ship with the fixture. I have seen people replace those hangers with zip ties. Zip ties are not rated for long-term weight, and they fail at the worst possible moment.
Step 4: Kill the circuit, then verify it is dead
A wall switch in the off position is not proof that a circuit is dead. I found that out on a small flood light job when the breaker was still live. Nothing terrible happened, but my hand remembered it for the rest of the day. Now I use a non-contact voltage tester before touching any wire, and I do not skip it just because the job is small.
For outdoor flood light installation, use a weatherproof junction box and outdoor-rated connectors. According to the National Electrical Code, outdoor receptacles generally need GFCI protection (NEC 210.8). Local codes can be stricter, so verify what applies where you are working.
For indoor grow lights, the wiring is usually simpler because most branded LED fixtures plug into a standard outlet. The mistake that shows up again and again is chaining multiple lights into one power strip. Add up the amp draw before you plug in the second fixture, not after the breaker trips at 2 a.m.
Step 5: Set the height and aim for the area you need to cover
Mounting the fixture is only half the install. After the light is secure, set the height based on the specification sheet, then step back and look at where the beam begins and ends.
For a flood light, aim it down far enough to avoid glare and overlap the beams when you use two fixtures. The classic result is two bright circles with a dark gap in the middle. For a grow light, center it over the canopy and measure the distance from the fixture to the top of the plants. This step is the one most people ignore because the finished light looks fine from eye level; the plants will tell you the truth three days later.
Step 6: Run a 48-hour test before you trust the install
In October 2022, my team finished a four-light installation and left the site. At 2 a.m., the customer called: one fixture had tripped the circuit because we had not accounted for the inrush current when all four lights powered up together. That call-back cost more than a whole day of testing would have.
So the final checklist item: run the light for 48 hours before you rely on it. Listen for buzzing, check the driver or heat sink for unusual heat, watch for flicker, and confirm the circuit holds under load. If a new LED fixture is going to fail, it often fails early. Let it fail while you are still standing there with a ladder.
Three reminders I still need
First, good lighting is boring. Every time I have tried to get creative with beam angles, zip ties, or close-enough heights, I have paid for it. Not ideal, but workable is usually the best outcome when you skipped a step.
Second, small jobs deserve the same checklist as big jobs. The customer who starts with one ViparSpectra P1000 grow light may not be a huge account today, but that does not mean they deserve a sloppy install. When I started out, the vendors who took my small trial orders seriously were the ones who got my larger orders later. Small doesn't mean unimportant; it means potential.
Third, if the work involves wiring you do not fully understand, hire a licensed electrician. This checklist is not a substitute for a code book. Use it to avoid the predictable mistakes, then let the people with the right training handle the parts that can hurt you.
